Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) — Machu Picchu, a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, is one of the best examples of Inca architecture. Built in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, the city appears to have been sculpted from the rocky slopes. Besides offering visitors a spectacular landscape, the site also exhibits biological diversity in flora and fauna. Machu Picchu was built approx. by the 15th century by the Inca Pachacútec (just over 100 years before the arrival of the Spaniards).
Machu Picchu consists of two large sections: the agricultural, which contains the terraces, and the urban, for administrative and religious functions. Among the most interesting aspects of its construction are the stone walls, perfectly shaped and juxtaposed without cement, as well as the channels’ system and water sources.
Machu Picchu was interconnected with the entire Inca empire through the Qapac Ñam, the network of Inca roads, which can still be walked to this day. However, access to the city was at one time prohibited by rural communities and local inhabitants, as its location was a state secret, concealed by the deep ravines and wild mountains. –
