BUSES

Tokyo has two types of buses: one type that lets passengers board at the front; the other lets them board at the back. You must check in advance which route you should take to go to your destination, since such bus routes can be complicated. Most bus routes in the 23 wards of Tokyo use a fixed fare regardless of your destination. Such buses are called “front-boarding” buses. When you board one of these buses, you will take a bus from the front entrance, and put the fare into the fare box beside the driver’s seat before proceeding inside.

As the bus approaches your destination, passengers must press the button attached to the wall to tell the driver to stop at the next bus stop. Waiting for the bus to stop, passengers get off from the rear door. Exit when you reach your destination. Buses that run outside of the 23 wards have you take a ticket when you board toward the rear of the bus. When you get off the bus at your destination, you pay the fare indicated for your ticket on the electric signboard at the front of the bus. This type of buses are called “rear-boarding” buses.

Services operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government offer two kinds of one-day tickets: a ticket (¥500 for adults and ¥250 for children) which allows passengers to get on and off as frequently as they like all day long, and a ticket (¥700 for adults and ¥350 for children) which lets passengers get on and off metropolitan buses, trains and subways as often as they like all day long.

For further inquiries, contact the metropolitan bus sales offices located at various places in Tokyo, or any of the stations of the Arakawa Line or Toei subways. One-day tickets for immediate use are also sold on metropolitan buses and trains. Links to bus maps can be found here:
